The terminal is expected to strengthen economic cooperation among India, Bhutan, and Bangladesh while generating employment opportunities in the region.

“Delighted to join Bhutan Minister HE Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji at the inauguration of the IWT Terminal of @IWAI_ShipMin on river Brahmaputra (NW-2) at Jogighopa in Assam,” Sonowal posted on X. “The state-of-the-art terminal, connected to the Multi Modal Logistics Park and strategically located in Jogighopa will be an international port of call for Bhutan and Bangladesh while enhancing logistics and cargo movement in Assam and the North East.”

The Jogighopa Terminal is part of a larger initiative taken by the central government to improve waterway infrastructure in the Northeast. In February 2024, Minister Sonowal had unveiled multiple projects worth ₹308 crore to enhance connectivity in the region.

These projects included the development of passenger-cum-cargo terminals at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh, an inland water transport terminal at Sonamura in Tripura, and upgraded terminals at Karimganj and Badarpur in Assam.
