ISIS claims responsibility for multiple attacks in Sri Lanka

GUWAHATI: A number of devastating blasts took place in various parts of Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, April 21. The death toll after these blasts has risen to 359, with around 500 people injured. This incident is the country’s worst terror attack till date. 

On Tuesday, April 23, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attacks by broadcasting the news through their ‘Amaq’ news agency. The attacks were propagated with the use of seven suicide bombers, who were seen swearing allegiance in a video footage. 

According to Police spokesperson, Ruwan Gunasekara, a total of 58 suspects have been arrested so far but Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe has warned that several more armed assailants are still on the loose.

Based on a report by Hindustan Times, India had sent as many as three alerts to Sri Lanka, including one just hours before the attack, according to senior intelligence officials. 

“India gave us the intelligence but there has been a lapse on how we acted on that... intelligence was not conveyed down the line,” PM Wickremesinghe said in an exclusive interview with another national media house. 

Speaking on the matter, Sri Lankan President, Maithripala Sirisena said that he had unfortunately no prior knowledge of the bomb threats that were received by their State Intelligence agencies.

“Will take strict actions against those who failed in their duty and that the country’s security apparatus will be restructured in the coming days, with key leadership changes in 24 hours,” said President Sirisena. 

Mass funerals are being held for the victims of the attacks in Negombo and Colombo while the whole country mourns these unfortunate loss of lives.
