Is Zubeen Garg Eyeing Rajya Sabha Seat?

GUWAHATI: In a surprising development, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has proposed the name of Zubeen Garg for the upcoming Rajya Sabha Elections in Assam to be held on 26th March.

It is to be mentioned that prominent Rajya Sabha members retiring from Assam as on 09.04.2020 are Bhubaneswar Kalita, Dr. Sanjay Singh and Biswajit Daimary.

Meanwhile, reacting to the proposal from the veteran Congress leader, Zubeen said, "I have no interest in politics but Rajya Sabha is different. Well-known faces are sent to Rajya Sabha from different states. Let me think about it. Right now, I can’t comment on this, let me reach Guwahati.”

If speculation is to be believed, APCC may back Zubeen who has been outspoken in his opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), for one of the vacant seats.

Earlier, Assam State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We will contest for one Rajya Sabha seat. Another one will go to BPF."

Further the minister added, “There is no question of contesting for the third seat if opposition parties are united. We will think strategically if they are not united.”
