GUWAHATI: Guwahati residents are voicing frustration over the proliferation of improperly constructed speed breakers across the city, which are causing significant inconvenience and safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians alike. Many speed breakers are not properly demarcated or marked as per national road standards, resulting in sudden jolts and vehicle damage, particularly for two-wheeler riders.

The unmarked and poorly placed bumps are also becoming a hazard for emergency vehicles, slowing response times.

“These speed breakers, often built without warning signs or proper height limits, are making daily commutes difficult and even dangerous,” shared a local resident, talking to GPlus.

This has also led to major and minor road accidents involving vehicles all around the city. On the night of November 9, a road accident occurred on the Japorigog area of Guwahati due to such a speed breaker. As per reports from an eye-witness, a duo on a two-wheeler crashed due to an unmarked speed breaker, causing the death of the pillion rider and injury to the rider.

Such speed breakers have also hampered people by causing vehicular damages and breakdowns.

In this context, talking to GPlus, a senior PWD official said, “Raised pavement markers (RPM) are very necessary for the safety of motorists regarding speed breakers. Generally, restoration work has no inclusion of speed breakers. At times where the road is constructed or restored the public demands speed breakers stating safety reasons. But, those are not a part of estimate and many speed breakers are left unaccounted for. Due to that reason a few speed breakers are left unmarked. Additionally, lack of funds is also a problem."

However, it remains to be seen how the authorities now tackle this issue throughout the city.
