Already notorious for severe waterlogging during heavy rain, Nabin Nagar faces the risk of another season of flooded streets and submerged homes due to inadequate drainage infrastructure.
Local residents have expressed frustration over the lack of timely action by the authorities despite repeated complaints and past experiences of chronic waterlogging.
“Every year, we suffer due to the same issue. Roads become impassable, houses are flooded, and there is no proper mechanism to drain out excess water,” said a resident while speaking to GPlus.
Many also point out that clogged drains, unplanned urban expansion, and poor maintenance are key contributors to the problem.
Talking to GPlus, Anil Kr. Kalita, a resident of the area said, “Without urgent measures such as proper desiltation of drains, improving water outlets, and proper waste management, the situation could worsen during the upcoming monsoon.”
Desiltation even when done, is carried out in an improper manner wherein the waste ends up inside the drain once again. The waste is also left to rot or harden beside the roads or drains where it emits foul stench, causing hygiene issues.
Talking to GPlus, a senior official from GMC said, “We are working on preemptive measures this time around before the onset of the monsoon so that the issue of waterlogging can be managed in the area.”
“Proper desiltation and cleaning of garbage disposal dumps are also being targetted to avoid issues,” he further added.
Despite multiple assurances, there has been no significant progress in revamping the drainage system. With the rainy season just months away, it remains to be seen as to how Nabin Nagar averts another cycle of urban flooding.
