IMD Issues Red Alert For Assam From Today As Guwahati Grapples With Waterlogging

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the states of Assam and a few other NE states for June 17,18 and 19 with the orange and yellow alerts for June 20 and 21 respectively.

The warning comes at a time when several parts of Guwahati were left grappling with waterlogging on June 17 following rainfall from the night of June 16.
Places like Chandmari, Zoo Road, Rajgarh, Hatigaon, and Sijubari, have been waterlogged since the wee hours of June 17. This has affected transport and communication, as motorists and pedestrians alike found it difficult to navigate the waterlogged roads.

According to the forecast by IMD Guwahati, Assam is expected to experience a range of severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and moderate to heavy rainfall.

The IMD has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunder and lightning in Assam and other NE states on June 17. On June 18, IMD predicts extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Assam and other states along with thunderstorms. The trend continues up to June 19 which showcases rainfall and thunder over parts of Assam and other NE states. The rainfall is expected to dip over the states on June 20 and 21.

IMD Guwahati has issued a forecast on June 17 for a thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by light to moderate rain which is very likely to occur at a few places over Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Chirang, Dhubri, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Kamrup.
