IMD Forecasts Rainfall For Guwahati After Record-Breaking Heatwave

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall for Guwahati starting on Tuesday, September 24. This weather change comes at a crucial time, as Assam has recorded its lowest rainfall in 75 years, exacerbating the impact of the current heatwave.

The updated forecast includes “few spells of rain or thundershowers” across the city throughout the week, with temperatures in Assam having recently reached around 38 degrees Celsius.|

This expected rain is likely to lower temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees, providing respite to residents after days of intense heat. IMD’s update also highlights that the weather shift is due to the merging of two cyclonic circulations: one over the West Central Bay of Bengal and the other over south Coastal Myanmar. These systems have combined into a cyclonic circulation over the Central Bay of Bengal, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level, and are tilting southwestward.

Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to originate in the upcoming 24 hours, potentially bringing the final surge of monsoon rainfall for the season. Thus, rainfall is expected to increase starting Tuesday, with heavier showers predicted for September 25 and 26.
