IIT Guwahati Signs MoUs With Canadian, Japanese Universities For PhD, Masters Programmes

 

GUWAHATI: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has entered into collaborations with two universities in Canada and Japan to enhance academics and research. The IIT Guwahati signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Dalhousie University, Canada, and Gifu University, Japan.

The MoUs will also facilitate student exchanges, and foster an academic environment conducive to innovation and academic excellence. The MoUs are for a period of five years, but could be extended.

The MoU with Dalhousie University will see establishment of a Joint Doctoral Programme aimed at fostering dynamic research collaborations between scholars and students from both institutes. Through exchange programmes for students and academic staff, joint research activities, and the sharing of research materials, this partnership aims to cultivate an environment conducive to academic excellence. 

On the other hand, IIT Guwahati and Gifu University will establish an “International Joint PhD Programme”. This spans a standard duration of three years and entails collaborative course design by both, offering students a comprehensive educational experience.

Scholars will receive collective guidance and mentorship from faculty members at both the institutes, ensuring rigorous academic standards and fostering innovative research outcomes. Besides, IIT Guwahati and Gifu University will also start a  two-year International Masters Joint Degree Programme in Food Science and Technology.

The programme aims to cultivate highly skilled professionals in food science and related fields. It emphasises data sharing and is designed to address challenges in building a sustainable society.

These apart, the Glocal Expert Programme, an international joint-certificate initiative under the Inter-University Exchange Project, will enable students to obtain certification from both universities as exchange students.

These partnerships were formalised during the “Japan-NER Bioeconomic Technology Cooperation Symposium 2024” (JNBTCS-2024), hosted by IIT Guwahati from March 3 to 5.

Prof. Kazuhiro Yoshida, President of Gifu University, was also extended the prestigious position of Honorary Professor at IIT Guwahati.
