Dr Biman B. Mandal of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati who was earlier named amongst the World's Top 2% scientist by Stanford University, is being conferred with the prestigious Swarna Jayanti Fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India for the year 2019-2020.
He received the award in the “Life Science” category for his notable research in the area of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

The Swarna Jayanti Fellowships were instituted by DST to commemorate India's 50th year of Independence.
He will henceforth be receiving a top-up salary and high-value research funds for the next 5 years to facilitate high degree of freedom and flexibility.
Dr. Biman B. Mandal is a Professor at the Department of Biosciences & Bioengineering and Centre for Nanotechnology and also the Associate Dean of Academics (UG) at IIT Guwahati.
He received his Ph.D from IIT Kharagpur and Post Doctorate from Tufts University, Boston, USA. Dr Mandal has successfully transferred/licensed 03 healthcare technologies to Industry and has published 141+ peer reviewed high impact journal articles with a cumulative impact factor of 748+, 5300+ citations and H-index of 38. He is the lead inventor in 17 patents, contributed 09 book chapters, delivered 67+ Plenary/Popular/Invited talks, Editorial board member of 12 International Journals.
During the Fellowship period, he will be working on a project titled “Modelling human liver micro-architecture and cellular physiology in vitro using 3D bio-printing for drug toxicity and high throughput drug screening applications.” The proposed in vitro 3D bio-printed human liver model would help the pharmaceutical companies to speed up the drug development process allowing high throughput screening with reduced associated animal costs. Lives of millions of animals could be saved in the process which is currently used as experimental models if an alternative human liver model becomes reality.
Mandal and his wife Dr Nandana Bharadwaj have recently been in the news after the couple got featured in Stanford University’s published list of World’s Top 2% scientist.
