GUWAHATI: Balkrishnan Goel, a Special Monitor appointed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), conducted a comprehensive inspection at the Guwahati Central Jail on February 20 to assess the various challenges faced by the inmates. During the visit, he reviewed the jail's facilities related to healthcare, drinking water, sanitation, accommodation, and other essential amenities.
Goel interacted with the inmates to understand their grievances and concerns firsthand. In response to the inmates' requests, he advised the jail superintendent to facilitate video calls for inmates to communicate with their relatives.

Additionally, the inmates suggested the installation of a complaint box to allow them to report issues directly to the jail authorities anonymously. Special Monitor Goel also met with the female inmates to assess their specific challenges and provided recommendations to address their concerns.
Following the visit to the Guwahati Central Jail, Goel proceeded to inspect the State Women's Home at Jalukbari under the Social Welfare Department. At the Women's Home, he interacted with the residents, including children, and gathered insights into the issues they faced.
Goel offered suggestions to the authorities to address the problems identified during the inspection. The inspection was conducted in the presence of Additional District Commissioner of Kamrup Metropolitan District, Biswajit Saikia, and several other officers who accompanied the NHRC Special Examiner.
