Does Guwahati See A Flurry Of Construction Activity Ahead Of Monsoon?

GUWAHATI: With the monsoon season approaching and sporadic showers and thunderstorms occurring, Guwahati is witnessing a noticeable uptick in public infrastructure construction activity.

This may be in a way attributed to authorities scrambling to meet deadlines and minimise seasonal disruptions. From road repairs and drainage overhauls to flyover work and desilting of clogged waterways, multiple projects across the city have seen an accelerated pace over the past month.

Sources confirmed that several key infrastructure initiatives—many of which had stalled or progressed slowly due to budgetary or logistical challenges—are now being fast-tracked in anticipation of heavy rain expected in June.
“We’re trying to complete critical groundwork before the monsoon sets in,” said a senior official while talking to GPlus.

“Multiple projects such as drainage construction in Rajgarh, desiltation in parts of the city  are being prioritised,” he added
Local residents, however, remain sceptical. While many welcome the visible effort, they worry that the rushed approach may compromise quality. “Every year, the same roads are dug up just before the rains, and by July, they’re already falling apart,” said Manoj Das, a resident of Beltola, talking to GPlus.

Drainage infrastructure continues to be a major concern in low-lying areas like Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, and parts of Maligaon, which are prone to waterlogging.

Talking to GPlus, a local of Nabin Nagar Ananya Kalita said, “We’ve seen no proper timeline, no real community consultation.”
Public works officials, however also stated that unpredictable weather patterns and resource constraints make it difficult to execute pre-monsoon planning smoothly.
