The Assam government has announced a series of projects for Guwahati in the state budget, focusing on urban infrastructure, healthcare, tourism, and transportation. The budget allocates significant funds for the city's development, ensuring modernisation and enhanced public services. The budget was presented on Monday, March 10 by Finance Minister Ajanta Neog.

The Housing & Urban Affairs Department has received a budgetary allocation of Rs. 9,306 crore, with a significant portion dedicated to Guwahati’s urban development. The city will see major infrastructure upgrades, including a new central business district at the site of the 10th Assam Police Battalion in Sonapur.
In a major healthcare boost, a Proton Therapy Centre will be set up at the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati, making it the first such facility in Eastern India and the third in the country. This advanced cancer treatment facility will be established at an estimated cost of Rs. 550 crore, with funding also coming from CSR initiatives.
The Brahmaputra Riverfront Development Project will continue to enhance Guwahati’s scenic and commercial value. Additionally, the state government has proposed exploring a Water Metro project, which will connect Fancy Bazar to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, allowing passengers to check in at the Fancy Bazar terminal and travel via waterways. A ropeway from Khanapara to the airport is also under consideration.
Guwahati will also host the BWF World Junior Badminton Championships in 2025, a major boost for sports in the region. Additionally, a 20,000-seater cricket stadium is under construction in Amingaon, set to be completed by 2026. The city is also getting a 100-bed sports hostel to support young athletes.
Infrastructure development remains a key priority, with Rs. 10,200 crore allocated for roads and highways. The much-anticipated 1.24 km bridge over the Brahmaputra, linking Guwahati and North Guwahati, is nearing completion, with 89% of the work finished. A 3.6 km bridge between Palashbari and Sualkuchi is also progressing well.
The education sector in Guwahati will see an upgrade with four new training institutes, including one in Guwahati, for skill development. The government is also setting up an AI-powered Anti-Deepfake & Cyber-Surveillance Lab, making Guwahati a key hub for cybersecurity research.
The Assam government has also signed an MoU with IIT Guwahati to conduct field assessments and improve highway safety measures, especially addressing black spots on roads.
Additionally, the city will see the construction of Unity Mall, a hub to promote local handicrafts and traditional products, aimed at boosting the state's cultural and tourism economy.
These initiatives underscore Guwahati’s growing importance as a center for business, healthcare, tourism, and infrastructure, marking a significant step in its transformation into a modern urban hub.
