Here's Why Smart City Work Isn't Progressing In Guwahati

In a series of tweets, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs stated that the unique geographic and demographic conditions of the north-eastern states have created challenges for the execution of the Smart City projects in Guwahati.

According to the tweets, this has also led to the unavailability of resources, including professionals at a competitive price.

Reportedly, due to these challenges, the projects had to be tendered multiple times before finalizing the vendor.

Guwahati has a sanction for 24 projects amounting to Rs 3,012 Cr under the Smart Cities Mission. Funds amounting to Rs 196 Cr have been released by Government of India (GoI), and an amount of Rs 190 crore has been transferred by the State Government.

Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) has invited tenders for 5 projects amounting to Rs 513 Cr while 6 projects worth Rs 25 Cr have either been partially or fully completed, stated a tweet. Several projects for water ATMs, Bio-Toilets & beautification are at an advanced stage of implementation under Area Based Development.

Barsola Bheel - Sewerage Treatment Plant project amounting Rs 96 crore, & LED lighting of signboards of Rs 51 crore are at bid evaluation stage. Work Orders for both these projects are likely to be issued by Sept 2018.
