Sijubari Continues To Shatter Ashok Singhal's Flood-Free Guwahati Dream

GUWAHATI: Ashok Singhal's ambitious plan for a flood-free Guwahati faced a setback as Sijubari continues to struggle with water logging issues. Despite promises made during a meeting in March 2024 chaired by the Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, the reality on the ground paints a different picture.

Residents of Sijubari expressed their frustration as even slight rainfall leads to deteriorating conditions in the area.

Talking to GPlus, Gulfan Khan, a resident of Sijubari said, "The situation worsens with every rain shower. It's not just humans but also animals that are suffering,"

Another resident, Azizur Rahman talking to GPlus said, "It's a recurring problem. Despite efforts like the installation of Jal Board pipes, the situation remains unchanged. Clogged drains are a common sight, especially after minimal rainfall."

Residents' grievances have long been ignored, as evidenced by a memorandum sent to Atul Bora in 2021, which was forwarded to the Public Works Department (PWD) with no tangible response received. This lack of action has left the community disillusioned and disappointed.

Masuma Begum, councillor of Hatigaon and a member of AAP talking to GPlus said, "The PWD has floated tenders, and work is expected to commence within the next two months."
