GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that heavy rain is likely to occur in isolated parts of Assam and Meghalaya from Wednesday onwards due to the advancement of southwest monsoon over parts of the northeast.

The data available with IMD indicate that southwest monsoon arrived on Monday, June 10 covering most parts of Mizoram and some parts of Manipur in its first leg. It has thus warned that heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated parts over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from Tuesday.

While several areas in Assam have been reeling in hot and humid weather since the last one week, officials at the Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre say that moderate rain, accompanied with thunder showers, is very likely to occur at many parts of the state.

"Generally, monsoon arrives in some parts of northeast on June 1 and covers the entire region by June 5. But this year, the arrival was delayed by about 10 days," informed Sanjay O'Neill Shaw, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Bojhar.

Till the monsoon covers the entire region, mercury levels will keep rising.
