Health Ministry Bans IPL From Promoting Tobacco & Alcohol

In a letter to IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, Director General of Health Services Atul Goel emphasized that cricketers, including commentators, should not be directly or indirectly involved in endorsing such products. The directive also calls for strict enforcement of advertising restrictions across stadiums, telecasts, and affiliated events.

“I urge that IPL strictly implement regulations banning all forms of tobacco/alcohol advertising, including surrogate advertisements, within the stadium premises as well as during telecasts,” Goel stated. He also urged the IPL to prohibit the sale of these products at affiliated events and sports facilities.

Highlighting the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in India, Goel underscored that tobacco and alcohol consumption are major contributors to health crises, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, diabetes, and hypertension. "We rank second in tobacco-related deaths globally, with nearly 14 lakh deaths annually. Alcohol remains the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in India," he noted.

With IPL being the nation’s largest sporting event and its players serving as role models for millions, the Health Ministry has emphasized the league’s “social and moral obligation” to promote a healthier lifestyle and support public health initiatives.

The upcoming season will kick off in Kolkata, with the city also hosting the grand finale as the Kolkata Knight Riders defend their title.
