Jio Partners With SpaceX To Bring Starlink Internet To India

GUWAHATI: Jio Platforms reportedly announced on Wednesday, March 12 that it has entered into an agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s satellite-based internet services in India. This development comes just a day after Bharti Airtel revealed a similar partnership. However, like Airtel, the deal is subject to SpaceX securing the necessary approvals to operate Starlink in the country.

Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, and SpaceX have previously been on opposing sides regarding the allocation of spectrum for satellite communications. While Jio has reportedly advocated for a spectrum auction, SpaceX has favored administrative allocation. The Indian government has opted for the latter approach.

Currently, SpaceX is reportedly awaiting security clearance from the Indian government, with its application under review by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to Jio, the partnership will reportedly allow both companies to explore ways in which Starlink can enhance Jio’s existing offerings while also supporting SpaceX’s direct-to-consumer and business services. Jio plans to make Starlink solutions available through its retail stores and online platforms.

“With this collaboration, both parties will leverage Jio’s extensive mobile network and Starlink’s advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology to provide reliable broadband connectivity, particularly in India’s most remote and underserved regions,” Jio said.

Beyond distributing Starlink equipment in its stores, Jio will also establish a support system for customer service, installation, and activation. The company emphasised that Starlink’s satellite internet will complement its existing JioAirFiber and JioFiber services by delivering high-speed connectivity in difficult-to-reach locations quickly and affordably.
Additionally, Jio and SpaceX are exploring further areas of cooperation to strengthen India’s digital infrastructure.

"By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and improving the accessibility of high-speed internet in this AI-driven era, empowering businesses and communities across the country,” said Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio.

“We are excited to collaborate with Jio and look forward to receiving the necessary approvals from the Indian government, enabling us to provide Starlink’s high-speed internet to more people, organizations, and enterprises,” added Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX.
