Harsimrat Kaur Badal Resigns from Modi Cabinet

GUWAHATI: Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Minister of Food Processing Industries resigned from the Modi cabinet protesting against the three farm bills presented by the centre in Parliament.

Her resignation has been accepted by the President Ram Nath Kovind. The move came as her party Akali Dal, an ally to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), faced a huge backlash from the farmers of Punjab over the news of Akali Dal’s initial support towards the farm sector bills.

Sukhbir Badal, husband of Harsimrat and the chief of Akali Dal said that their party will still support the union government from outside but will stand against "anti-farmer policies".

Sukhbir Badal also recalled Punjab’s massive contribution to make India self-sufficient in food production while opposing the bill.

“Proud to stand with farmers as their daughter & sister,” Harsimrat tweeted.

Meanwhile, cabinet minister Narendra Singh Tomar has been assigned the additional charge of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
