GUWAHATI: The improper use of helmets by two-wheeler riders is posing to be a troubling road safety issue in Guwahati.

A significant number of riders and pillion passengers are observed wearing helmets only partially, leaving them unsecured or resting on their heads without fastening the straps. This dangerous practice undermines the very purpose of helmets and increases the risk of severe injuries during accidents.

Speaking to GPlus, a local resident of Ganeshguri said, “We tend to apply it unknowingly as generally during office or work hours we are in a hurry and at that time it is just a formality. It is wrong to not care, but what do we do?”

Talking to GPlus, a senior traffic official from Paltan Bazar police station said, "Wearing a helmet incorrectly is as good as not wearing one at all. In case of a collision or sudden braking, an unsecured helmet will not provide any protection and can even become a hazard. We do try to generally fine the violators or people who are in this habit. But, most of the times they try to get away with one excuse or another, as there is no specific law for improperly wearing a helmet or half wearing it."

The practice appears to be fueled by a mix of casual attitudes, lack of awareness, and attempts to evade penalties. Many riders treat helmets as mere formalities to comply with traffic regulations, wearing them loosely to avoid fines rather than for their protective function. Others complain about discomfort or the inconvenience of fastening the straps.

As Guwahati continues to grow as a metropolitan hub, the need for proper road safety measures becomes more urgent towards which the citizens have to strive towards.
