GUWAHATI: The much-discussed twin towers project in Guwahati’s Betkuchi, initially proposed during the administration of former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, has been restructured. The project is now being developed as the Integrated Directorate Complex.

In a social media post on X on Sunday, March 2, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the shift in plans. He stated, “Those who are asking about the twin towers, this is what we are constructing in Betkuchi, Guwahati, as the Integrated Directorate Complex.”

The original twin towers project, estimated at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore, was announced in 2018 in partnership with the National Building Construction Company (NBCC). However, the initiative faced setbacks due to a lack of investor interest and NBCC's eventual withdrawal from the project.

In January 2023, Chief Minister Sarma formally introduced the Integrated Directorate Complex as a replacement for the twin towers. During his announcement, Sarma emphasised the long-term benefits of the new development, stating that the twin towers concept was no longer feasible. He proposed that the creation of an IIM or a Central University in the region would provide much greater value and impact.
