GUWAHATI: The Assam Government, during yesterday's state cabinet meeting, decided to take steps towards the planned development of peri-urban greenfield sites within the Guwahati Metropolitan Area by initiating the process and publishing a draft notification for the declaration of the area expressing its intent to prepare a Town Planning Scheme (TPS).
Peri-urban regions, often described as peripheral areas, refer to the non-urban landscapes that are in close proximity to or encircle metropolitan cities.
These areas can be characterised by their connection to a nearby metropolitan area on one side, a rural area on the other side, or simply as the land that lies in between.
The chosen site for the Town Planning Scheme encompasses Shatikarpa (pt), Maliata (pt), and Losana villages, covering an extensive area of approximately 296.9 hectares.
This selection is in line with the government's vision of expanding and enhancing the urban infrastructure in and around Guwahati while preserving the ecological balance and ensuring sustainable growth.
The primary objective of this initiative is to facilitate planned and organised urban development that caters to the evolving needs of the region.
