Guwahati's Rukminigaon Flyover Construction Forces Long Detours: Daily Commuters, Residents, And Businesses Struggle

GUWAHATI: The ongoing flyover construction in Rukminigaon has turned daily life into a challenge for commuters, residents, and business owners. The absence of a passage in the area has forced vehicles to take long detours, either through the Six Mile flyover or the Supermarket route, leading to increased travel time, heavy traffic congestion, and disrupted livelihoods.

For daily commuters, the detours have become a major source of frustration. “Entering Rukminigaon has become extremely difficult,” a commuter told GPlus. “Now I have to take detours either from the Six Mile flyover or Supermarket, which wastes a lot of time and adds to traffic jams.”

Ranjan Kalita, who lives in Rukminigaon, expressed his struggles. “We need a crossing here. Due to the construction, we take longer routes just to drop our children at school. Many shops are shutting down because of this. They should have provided at least one crossing,” he said.

Local businesses in Rukminigaon are struggling to stay afloat due to the ongoing flyover construction.

A shop owner in Rukminigaon talking to GPlus said, “Our sales have dropped drastically since the construction began. The barricades have cut off access, and people from the other side cannot reach us anymore. We have even had to let go of some staff, and paying rent has become a challenge.”

Hotel owners are also struggling. “Vehicles can’t park, and customers can’t cross to the other side. Even delivery orders are hard to fulfill. We have requested road access, but authorities have denied it. Food wastage has increased because there are fewer customers,” a hotel owner told GPlus.

Delivery agents have not been spared either. “I now have to take the longer route through Supermarket to deliver orders between Rukminigaon and Six Mile. It’s frustrating because we don’t get extra pay for these detours,” said one delivery agent.

While residents and businesses demand solutions, officials have cited safety concerns.

Talking to GPlus, A PWD official said, “Creating a passage is not possible at this time due to ongoing construction. It could lead to accidents or risks from falling materials.”
