GUWAHATI: The residents of Rathkhola in Fatasil Ambari, Guwahati, are bearing the brunt of incomplete road and drainage work, halted for nearly 45 days by the Public Works Department (PWD). The suspension of work has left the locality tormented by waterlogging, poor drainage, and a rise in waterborne diseases.

“Our locality is facing various problems due to the discontinuation of PWD work for nearly 45 days. Because of the delay, we are experiencing waterlogging, poor drainage facilities, and one of the most serious concerns is that the stagnant water is spreading various diseases,” said a local resident from Rathkhola.

The situation is magnified by the pathetic condition of the roads, with drain spillages making the area more vulnerable to health and safety risks. Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of progress and its direct impact on their quality of life.

Speaking to GPlus, Ward No. 20 councillor Gour Gopal Mandal acknowledged the issue, stating, “Due to some issues within the PWD, the work was halted, but it will resume after a few days.”

However, attempts by GPlus to contact PWD officials from the concerned division for further clarification went unanswered, leaving residents with no clear timeline or explanation for the delay.

The stalled work highlights significant coordination issues within the PWD, raising concerns about accountability and the department’s ability to manage essential infrastructure projects. With the locality now facing a health crisis, residents are demanding urgent intervention to complete the work and restore normalcy.

With light showers in the city, the unresolved drainage problems threaten to worsen the waterlogging issue, making it crucial for authorities to act immediately to prevent further deterioration of living conditions in Rathkhola.
