Just weeks earlier, in April, Begum had stepped down from her position as the State President of AAP Assam’s Women Wing and also resigned from the party’s primary membership. Her move marks a major political shift in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), where AAP had a single representative.
Begum made her political debut in the 2022 GMC elections, securing a win from Ward 42, which includes Barsajai, Hatigaon, Notboma, and the embankment road areas. Her victory had been a key breakthrough for AAP in Assam’s local civic body elections.
In February 2024, her husband had publicly declared his own switch to the BJP, fueling speculation about her next political move. The confirmation of her joining the saffron party comes from a senior BJP Assam official, who told GPlus, “She has joined our party sometime back.”
