GUWAHATI: The Assam government has officially renamed the Chabipul Chariali in Guwahati as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chowk, to mark the 135th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

The announcement was made by Assam’s Public Health Engineering Minister, Jayanta Mallabaruah, during an event held on Monday, April 14.
“Attended the 135th Birth Anniversary celebration of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar ji, organized by the Chabipul Balmiki Sewa Samiti under the aegis of the All India Balmiki Mahapanchayat, Kamrup District Committee today, and offered floral tributes to the portrait of the architect of Indian Constitution,” Mallabaruah posted on X. “In the same event today, officially renamed the Chabipul Tiniali area under Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chowk.”
Ambedkar Jayanti, celebrated every year on April 14, is an occasion that highlights the democratic ideals championed by the former Minister of Law and Justice of India. This year, states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana witnessed large-scale tributes in his honor.
The day is marked as a gazetted national holiday, with government offices, banks, schools, and courts closing across the country, though digital banking services remained operational.
