GUWAHATI: In a positive development, Guwahati's air quality has considerably improved amidst the night curfew and other COVID-19 restrictions in Assam. The city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 38 as of 4 PM of May 27, which is considered as 'Good' air quality, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concerns related to it.
The change in the air quality can be attributed to the reduced movement of vehicles following the COVID-19 restrictions in the state.
If we compare today's AQI with that of the same day in previous years, it is evident that Guwahati residents breathe easy post-COVID-19 lockdown as the air quality has improved.
On May 27, 2020, an AQI of 46 was recovered which is considered as good air quality as well. However, if we go back another year, in 2019 which was pre- COVID times, on the same date (May 27) the AQI in Guwahati was 72, which is much higher than what it is today.
