Guwahati: Three Apprehended In Scuffle Over Assamese Language

GUWAHATI: In response to an appalling incident of disrespect towards the Assamese language on the night of July 15, Dispur Police have taken strict actions, registering Case Number 1348/23, and arresting three individuals involved in the disturbing episode. The actions were carried out following explicit orders from the Headquarters of Assam Police to address the matter promptly. 

The incident, which took place near Shree Nagar Point in Guwahati, involved a group of miscreants who engaged in an altercation with several people, including workers of an eatery on GS Road, simply for speaking in Assamese. The shocking encounter, which turned violent, was recorded on camera and circulated on various social media platforms, prompting widespread outrage and condemnation. 

Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) issued an order directing the Guwahati Police Commissioner to take immediate action against the troublemakers responsible for causing disharmony and chaos in the locality. 

Speaking to G Plus, a senior official from Dispur Police Station confirmed the arrests, stating, "Three of the culprits have been taken into custody." 

The arrested individuals have been identified as Gulshan Singh, a 24-year-old, Ritick Jindal, aged 25, and a 17-year-old minor. The minor has been sent to a reform home for juveniles as per legal provisions. 

The incident has sparked outrage among the citizens of Assam, who view language as an integral part of their identity and cultural heritage.
