The revelation of candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) alliance from Guwahati constituencies is expected to get delayed. The ensuing Assam elections are scheduled to take place in three phases: first on March 27, second on April 1 and third on April 6.

The four constituencies of Guwahati - Dispur, East Gauhati and West Gauhati and Jalukbari - will be contesting on April 6.

As per highly placed sources in the BJP, the names of the candidates participating in the Guwahati constituencies might be revealed around March 9-11. However, the list for the first and the second phase of elections is set to be revealed by the BJP sooner than March 9 after much deliberation at the central level.

The matter has been taken up at the meeting held in Delhi between Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Shah's residence.

There also lies an ambiguity for the BJP in two of the constituencies of Guwahati, i.e. West Gauhati and East Gauhati.

For the Gauhati East constituency seat, three names have been forwarded by the BJP - incumbent Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sidhartha Bhattacharya, former Mayor of Guwahati Mrigen Sarania and Santanu Bharali, Legal Adviser to the Chief Minister of Assam.

As for the West Gauhati constituency, the incumbent MLA from AGP faces alliance friction from BJP members over his candidature.
