Guwahati: People Without Masks to Face Penalty amid Rise in COVID-19 Cases

GUWAHATI: Amid a massive spike in COVID-19 cases in Assam, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration is planning to impose fines on those who are not wearing masks. The administration has decided to make masks mandatory for all residents in Guwahati city.


Kamrup (M) DC Biswajit Pegu said that the administration in a meeting on Friday decided that wearing masks will be compulsory in the district. "If people don’t wear masks in public, the authorities will impose a penalty of Rs 500 for the first and Rs 1,000 for the second offense and subsequent violations,” Pegu told media in Guwahati.


The deputy commissioner also emphasized that those not wearing marks properly will also be fined. Meanwhile, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Guwahati (Kamrup Metro district) has gone up to 186 amid the second wave of coronavirus as of Sunday, April 11. With the new detection, the total number of new cases reported in Assam stands at 352 as of April 11.
