Guwahati: One Of Two Suspects In Kamakhya Railway Station Theft Case Arrested

GUWAHATI: The Railway Police Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) successfully apprehended one of the two criminals involved in the theft of a visually impaired lady's bag containing ₹20,000/- and crucial documents on Thursday. The incident occurred on August 2, 2023, at Kamakhya Railway Station, Guwahati.

According to the victim's report, she and her mother boarded Train No. 05804 DN (GHY-NBQ Passenger) at Guwahati Railway Station at 07:30 AM. Before their departure, two individuals volunteered to assist them during their journey to Kamakhya station. However, upon reaching Kamakhya, the good intentions of the two suspects quickly turned malevolent as they disappeared with the bag, leaving the distraught victims searching in vain.

Upon receiving the report, the Inspector of RPF/Kamakhya, along with his team, initiated an immediate investigation. By reviewing CCTV footage, the mother of the visually impaired lady successfully identified the two culprits. Their photographs were promptly disseminated among the staff at Kamakhya station and GRP personnel.

A joint operation was launched involving RPF and GRP teams from Kamakhya station, conducting an extensive manhunt at various locations, including Maligaon and Guwahati Railway stations. Around 8:20 PM on Thursday, a potential sighting of one suspect at Guwahati station was reported to the authorities. After confirming the identity through photographs, the combined RPF and GRP teams moved swiftly and managed to apprehend the first miscreant at the circulating area of Guwahati railway station around 8:35 PM.

The arrested suspect is currently in custody and is undergoing rigorous interrogation. Subsequently, on August 3, 2023, another arrest was made by the combined RPF and GRP teams at Guwahati station in connection with the same incident.

The victim has lodged a formal complaint, leading to the registration of a case (No. 130/23 dated 03.08.2023) under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code by the Officer in Charge of GRP, Guwahati.

An investigation is going on to nab the second miscreant as well.
