Guwahati: Now ASTC Buses Under RTA Scanner

GUWAHATI: The Regional Transport Department alongside Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) Vigilance Cell and Guwahati Traffic Police conducted a drive against the ASTC city buses on March 12.

DTO (Enforcement), Bapan Kalita conducted a drive operation against the unruly ASTC City buses at Ganeshguri. The operation was conducted to check if the ASTC buses were complying with the rules and regulations that were introduced for the private buses in the city.

Talking to G Plus, Kalita informed that of the 245 ASTC city buses that were plying in the city, 100 have now been diverted to other places of the state, in order to ease traffic congestion.

District transport authorities have suspended 272 permits of private operators up till now.  Further 126 driving license have also been suspended. More than Rs. 26 lakhs have been realised as fine from buses since last February up till date.

“This is the first time that the RTA has launched operation against ASTC buses and we have booked many cases as well”, said Kalita.

The drives are conducted in light of the directives issued by the Gauhati High Court in response to the PIL (72/2016) of Rita Das Mozumder.
