GUWAHATI: In the wake of escalating cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE), a devastating vector-borne illness, a school student hailing from Udalguri district met an unfortunate end in Guwahati on Sunday.
The young student succumbed to the disease while undergoing medical treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
The deceased was a seventh-grade student enrolled at North East Public School in Majbat and was a resident of Kadabil Village.
According to data disclosed by the National Health Mission (NHM) Assam, the state has borne witness to approximately 362 reported cases of JE this year alone, with a heart-wrenching tally of 19 fatalities as of August 11. This sobering statistic underscores the severity of the situation, with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) calculated at 5.25 per cent.
The daily influx of JE-positive cases in Assam has not abated either, with the count standing at 12 as of August 11.
