GUWAHATI: Guwahati police on Monday, April 21, rescued an 11-month-old girl, who was sold off by her grandfather for a paltry ₹5,000 when she was only a month old last year.

According to Basistha Police Station, a complaint was received on April 21 from one Ambiya Khatun (29 years), wife of Nur Sahadat, resident of River Bank, Near Games Village in Guwahati, stating that on 30/05/2024, her stepfather Abed Ali took her and her one-month-old daughter to Sontali in her husband’s absence, citing medical treatment.
Subsequently, she came to know that her stepfather had allegedly sold her one-month-old daughter to someone for ₹5,000. Accordingly, the police registered a case under section 370(4) IPC R/W Sec 81 of the JJ Act (Child and Protection of Children), and began an investigation. During the course of investigation, the team from Basistha Police Station led by Officer-in-Charge Kapil Pathak proceeded to Sontali and apprehended the two persons involved in the case - Abed Ali (45 years), the grandfather, and Taher Ali (48 years) who had taken the child. The child Kristi Khatun (11 months) was rescued from Sontali Satra.
