GUWAHATI: Every January, gyms across India, including those in Guwahati, experience an exciting surge of new fitness enthusiasts eager to kickstart their health journeys. This annual "January gym boom" brings a fresh energy to the fitness scene, as individuals, inspired by New Year’s resolutions, commit to healthier lifestyles.

The enthusiasm is palpable, with fitness centres buzzing with activity. Kaushik Das, a seasoned gym-goer from Ulubari, appreciates the renewed vigour, saying, “It’s great to see so many people taking steps towards fitness. The energy is contagious and motivates everyone to push harder.”
This surge is reflected in national trends. A recent Statista Consumer Insights survey revealed that 27% of Indians reported paying for a gym membership last year, showcasing the growing emphasis on fitness in the country.
Personal trainers, like Guwahati-based Priya Sharma, see this period as an opportunity. “January is a fantastic time for people to set new goals. The influx of newcomers creates a dynamic environment, encouraging everyone to stay committed to their fitness journeys,” she says. Social media also plays a role, with many sharing their progress and inspiring others to stay active.
Gym owners are embracing this seasonal increase as a chance to build a supportive community. Shivam, a gym owner in Guwahati, notes, “We love seeing new faces. It’s a reminder that fitness is for everyone, and we’re here to support each person’s journey, whether they’re just starting out or have been with us for years.”
To cater to both new and regular members, gyms are focusing on fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect. Shivam adds, “We encourage our members to help each other, share equipment, and maintain a welcoming environment. It’s about building a community where everyone feels comfortable and motivated.”
Guwahati’s fitness journey has witnessed a dynamic evolution over the last decade, with gym culture gaining steady traction across the city. Fitness trends in Guwahati show seasonal peaks, with gym memberships typically surging during specific periods.
It has been observed that the cycle begins in April after Bohag Bihu, continuing through the summer months, and experiences another spike during Durga Puja and Diwali ahead of the wedding season.
The New Year resolutions bring another wave of fitness enthusiasts starting January 1, followed by a dip around Uruka, only to rise again before Valentine’s Day.
But over the years, gyms in Guwahati have transitioned from being seen as a luxury for the elite to becoming a popular choice for health-conscious individuals across demographics. This shift can be attributed to pop culture, social media influence, and a growing awareness of health and fitness.
According to Simanta Dev Choudhury of SK-27 Gym Guwahati, “Today, gyms in the city offer certified personal trainers and better facilities, making fitness more accessible. However, the numbers still reveal room for growth. Only 55-65% of gym-goers are consistent, and a mere 10-15% are truly dedicated regulars.”
“I would say that only 2% of people in Guwahati go to the gym. Many are still hesitant due to various reasons, including safety concerns and persistent myths about fitness,” he further added.
With Guwahati’s fitness culture on the rise, gyms are dedicated to empowering individuals at every stage of their fitness journey, from newcomers to seasoned regulars. What steps will you take to make fitness a lasting part of your life?
