GUWAHATI: Local residents of Deepor Beel and Pamohi in Guwahati accompanied by various citizens and social organisations protested in Pamohi on Sunday, June 26, demanding that the landfill site be moved elsewhere from the West Boragaon site.
The protesters' demands also included action against the Railways for violating all National Green Tribunal (NGT), Forest Department and Ramsar Site norms and forcefully carrying out double rail lines and electrification work.
A Memorandum was submitted to the Chief Secretary of Assam citing the violations by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the Railway Department and the Assam Government by allowing a landfill site in an ecologically sensitive zone, a Ramsar site and an Important Bird Area(IBA).
Citizen and social organisations like the Deepor Beel Suraksha Manch, Paspara Somobai Somittee Ltd., Pochim Guwahati Soseton Nagarik Manch, Pamohi Mikir Para Raij, Kalita Para Raij, Deochotal Nabajyoti Sangha and Brihator Jalukbari Malayanagar Unnayan Manch took part in the protest from 11 AM to 1 PM.
Recently, two Greater Adjutants, an endangered species, were found dead in the Belor Ali area of Deepor Beel. Local residents reported foul smell and highlighted the presence of toxic fluid at the Deepor Beel, threatening the several endangered species of birds, fish and other organisms.
