Earlier, chief minister of Assam, Sarananda Sonowal had personally directed Guwahati Commissioner of Police, MP Gupta, to lead a team to investigate the matter and bring back Garga Chatterjee from West Bengal. However, due to non-cooperation of Kolkata Police, the accused could not be arrested.

Garga Chatterjee had made derogatory statements on his Twitter handle against Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom Kingdom.

Assam Police has booked Chatterjee under Section 153 A of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of Information Technology (IT) Act.
