Guwahati Congress Lodges Complaint Over CM Sarma’s ‘Derogatory’ Remark Against Women

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati City District Congress Committee has formally demanded the immediate registration of an FIR against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over what it described as “shameless and derogatory” remarks targeting the women of Assam. The complaint, dated May 1, 2025, was addressed to the Officer-in-Charge of Dispur Police Station and signed by Gopal C. Sarma, a member of the committee.

The controversy stems from a public meeting held at Bihaguri under Borsala LAC on April 28, during which CM Sarma allegedly stated that women during the previous Congress regime had to “lose their virginity” to secure government jobs. The statement, widely circulated across media platforms, has triggered sharp criticism and demands for legal action.

“The comment made by the Chief Minister is deeply offensive, disrespectful, and utterly baseless,” the letter stated. “It reflects a deplorable standard of public discourse and has caused immense hurt to the sentiments of the women community of our state.”

The Congress committee termed the remark as not only unacceptable but also punishable under the law, citing that it amounted to a gross insult to the dignity of women. The petition urged police to register an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and to initiate a detailed investigation followed by appropriate legal action.

The letter has been officially received by the Dispur Police Station, as indicated by the acknowledgment stamp dated 01/05/2025.

No immediate response was issued from the Chief Minister’s Office at the time of filing this report. However, the incident has reignited political tensions in the state, with opposition parties calling for an apology and accountability from the Chief Minister.

The Congress has made it clear that it will not back down until action is taken. “We cannot allow those in the highest office to make such derogatory generalisations against the women of Assam,” the complaint stated.
However, Sarma has defended himself saying he had only cited from the  Biplab Sharma Commission which had investigated the cash-for job scam.

Further developments are awaited as the police examine the content of the complaint and decide on the next course of action.
