GUWAHATI: The Assam Rock and Sport Climbing Association on Tuesday announced that in order to promote the culture of sport climbing among youth, the association will be building indoor walls in various educational institutions and sports complexes.

The decision was announced by the President of Assam Rock and Sport Climbing Association, Ramendra Narayana Kalita who mentioned that the decision will be implemented by the association along with the help of the administration and sports councillor.

While talking about the move to establish indoor climbing walls Kalita said, “We have joined hands with the Assam Govt and the sports councillor to build indoor walls in various educational institutes like Royal Global and in Sarusajai stadium so that the youths can practice”.

The tradition of sport climbing is an emerging sport that is gaining traction among people. In addition to that, there are numerous organisations that are trying to organise competitions and training programs to encourage participation.

Kalita further added, “Even though it’s an Olympic-level game, there isn’t much awareness of it in the State. Since we do not have the proper infrastructures to promote it, we are planning on including it in the curriculum of educational institutes not only in Guwahati but also in the Upper and Northern parts of Assam.”

This decision was taken by the association on the occasion of Assam Earth Day to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Tarun Saikia’s triumph on Mount Everest.

The organisation has been observing Assam Everest Day since May 18, 2019, to encourage Assamese youth to embrace adventure sports.

While sport climbing in Assam is still in its early stages of development, efforts are being made to establish climbing facilities and promote this sport. The association is actively involved in promoting this sport and has promised of organising climbing events, competitions, and training programs to encourage participation and skill development.
