Guwahati: Citizens To Form Human Chain To Protest Against Traffic Woes On AT Road

GUWAHATI: In response to the severe traffic congestion plaguing areas like Bharalumukh, Santipur, Machkhowa, Kumarpara, Athgaon, and Fatasil, Citizen Coordination Committee of Guwahati, has decided to protest against the issue and has urged the residents to participate in protest where human chain will be formed in the affected areas tomorrow. The protest aims to highlight the pressing need for solutions to the ongoing traffic problems in the area.

Through a press statement, the committee emphasised on the recent opening of the elevated corridor from Bhootnath to Lachit Ghat in Machkhowa, leading to the bridge across the Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati.

However, despite this development, traffic congestion persists, prompting demands for immediate action.

Key demands put forward by the committee include the reopening of the road from Bhoothnath to Machkhowa, allowing vehicles from Maligaon to travel towards Fancy Bazar, Panbazar, Chandmari, Ulubari, and Dispur, through the elevated corridor. Additionally, the committee calls for the reinstatement of city bus services to facilitate transportation in areas like Bhootnath, Santipur, Bharalumukh, and Machkhowa.

Furthermore, the committee advocated for parking restrictions to accommodate small vehicles only on one side of the streets and for the removal of encroachments from roads and footpaths in the affected areas.

Memorandums have been submitted to local authorities, including traffic police officials, PWD (Roads), and the District Commissioner, urging them to implement the proposed solutions promptly. The committee stressed the importance of finding a well-considered and enduring solution to the city's commuting challenges.
