Guwahati Airport to install Body Scanners by March 2020

GUWAHATI: The Centre has directed 84 airports across the country, including Guwahati, to install body scanners by March 2020.

The existing door frame metal detectors, hand-held scanners and pat-down searches for passengers will be replaced following the installation of the body scanners.

Based on a report by NDTV, a circular sent by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to all airports in April this year, stated that walk-through metal detectors and hand-held metal detectors cannot detect non-metallic weapons and explosives, while body scanners can detect both.

According to the report, of the 105 operational airports in the country at present, 28 have been classified as “hypersensitive,” which includes Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal in the northeastern region.

Further, 56 airports have been categorised as “sensitive.”

Based on reports, these hypersensitive and sensitive airports would positively have to install body scanners by March 2020, while the remaining airports can install it by March 2021.

To pass through the body scanners, passengers would have to remove their jackets, any thick outer clothing, shoes, belts and all metallic items.
