GUWAHATI: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati marked a remarkable achievement in 2023, handling a record-breaking 56 lakh passengers.

This figure represents a growth of 17%, surpassing the previous year's numbers by 10 lakh passengers.

The airport, with a total of 46,166 air traffic movements, witnessed a substantial increase of about 5,600 flights compared to the preceding year.

The breakdown of these movements reveals an equal distribution between arrivals and departures, highlighting the balanced traffic at the airport.

In terms of passenger distribution, approximately 29 lakh arrivals and 27 lakh departures were recorded in 2023. This is a significant leap from the 4.6 million passengers in 2022, showcasing the airport's expanding role as a major transportation hub.

New horizons were explored in terms of connectivity, with Jaipur and Bhubaneswar joining the list of domestic destinations served by Guwahati Airport in 2023.

On the international front, Bangkok became the sole new international connection.

The airport's success is further emphasised by the record-setting day on December 24, 2023, when a peak of 19,290 passengers passed through the terminal, underscoring the robust demand for air travel in the region.

Utpal Baruah, Chief Airport Officer (CAO), while speaking to GPlus stated, "We are happy that in the recent calendar year 2023, we have exceeded the previous year's passenger number by 10 lakh. 17% growth is one of the highest in the country. With new connections to Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, and Bangkok, we are committed to enhancing domestic and international travel options in the coming year."
