Government of Assam to Promote All Students of Classes 1-9

GUWAHATI: Considering all aspects of the COVID-19 impact on the education system, the government of Assam has decided to promote all students of classes 1-9 to the next higher classes. Assam government has issued a notice to all school authorities stating that irrespective of the fact that students appear in the annual examinations or not, the students will be promoted.

The notification has been issued in response to confusion among the school authorities regarding the conduct of the annual examination for the Elementary Section (Classes 1 to 8) and Class 9 of Secondary Section.

"In view of the lockdown in the state of Assam from the month of March till 01st November 2020, the schools were physically closed and online classes were conducted by the schools and the Education Department through digital devices and due to digital divide many of the students could not afford online classes," the notice stated.

"The next academic session should start invariably from April 1st, 2021 unless there is any further direction from the government," the notification further said.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, students have been taking online tuitions from school teachers and even private tutors to complete their syllabus for the current academic session. Lakhs of students weren't able to access a smartphone due to their economic conditions in the 2020-2021 academic year.
