GMCH Welcomes First IVF Conceived Baby 

 

GUWAHATI: In a groundbreaking development, the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) announced the birth of a baby girl conceived through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) technology. The baby was born on March 27.

GMCH Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Achyut Chandra Baishya, disclosed this momentous achievement during a press conference held at the hospital.

Prof. Baishya revealed, "In 2022, we initiated an infertility clinic at our esteemed institution. On March 27, 2024, a beautiful baby girl, conceived through IVF, was delivered via caesarean section in our hospital. Weighing a healthy 2.6 kilograms, both the mother and the baby are reported to be in stable condition, bringing immense joy to our medical fraternity."

The GMCH Superintendent, Dr. Abhijit Sarma, shed light on the accessibility and affordability of IVF treatment provided at GMCH. He stated, "While private hospitals charge approximately ₹5–₹6 lakh for IVF treatment, we offer the same service at a significantly reduced cost of ₹70,000. GMCH takes pride in being the pioneering government-run hospital to offer IVF treatment in the Northeast region."
