GMC Workers Struggle Without Proper Safety Gear

GUWAHATI: The lack of adequate safety gear for Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) workers has raised serious concerns about their well-being and working conditions. Despite performing critical tasks like waste collection, sewer cleaning, and road maintenance, many workers are forced to carry out their duties without proper protective equipment.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that several GMC workers are seen handling hazardous materials and operating in unsanitary environments without gloves, masks, boots, or other essential gear. This not only puts their health at risk but also compromises their safety during tasks such as manhole cleaning or garbage disposal.

But, such issues are not only one-dimensional but deep-rooted with various factors.

Talking to GPlus, Mrigen Sarania, Mayor of GMC said, “ We make sure to provide the proper gear and safety equipment for their working, but it is their negligence at times which deters them from using proper gear, which needs to be addressed. Be it awareness or stricter imposition.”

Efforts to improve these conditions could not only enhance the safety of GMC workers but also ensure more efficient delivery of essential civic services, benefiting the entire city.
