The Mayor emphasised on the goal to provide a consistent and reliable water supply to all parts of Guwahati. To achieve this goal, three major water supply projects are currently being implemented: the JICA Assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project, the NDB Assisted South East Guwahati Water Supply Project, and the South West Guwahati Water Supply Project.
The Mayor provided updates on these projects:
1. JICA Assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project: This project is already supplying water to 25,000 households. The ongoing work is expected to be completed by December 2024, which will enable water supply to approximately 1,10,000 households in South Central Guwahati.
2. South West Guwahati Water Supply Project: Currently serving 1,500 households, this project aims to expand its coverage to nearly 30,000 households in the near future.
3. South East Guwahati Water Supply Project: This project is being designed to cater to 67,000 households in the South East region of Guwahati.
This decision was taken during the 34th Mayor-in-Council meeting held on August 12, 2024. According to this decision, all existing consumers under the jurisdiction of GMC, approximately 34,000 households, will receive a subsidy of ₹7,000 from the Corporation. Additionally, new consumers who wish to apply for a water connection will also be eligible for this subsidy, provided they have a valid Ration Card.
All citizens have been appealed by the GMC to approach their respective Ward Councillors for any assistance related to water supply services.
