GUWAHATI: Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has demanded an immediate inquiry on the deteriorating conditions of the National Highways in Assam.

In a formal letter addressed to Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Gaurav Gogoi has expressed deep concern over the worsening condition of National Highways in Assam.

The letter highlights the ‘lackadaisical approach’ of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) towards vital development projects in the region.

Gogoi, who previously raised these concerns in July 2023 and during the winter session of Parliament, stated that the issues persist.

“Grievances from constituents and feedback from local administration point to slow progress and mismanagement under NHIDCL, particularly affecting NH 37, a critical lifeline for Assam's residents,” Gogoi said.

The Teok-Sivasagar section of the Numaligarh-Dibrugarh four-lane highway, integral to the state's infrastructure, is cited as underdeveloped with frequent contractor changes.

And NH 37 is reportedly marred by potholes and cracks, posing risks to road users, especially during the monsoon season.

Serious irregularities in compensation and land acquisition processes for the Parokhuwa to Lahorijan stretch of the 113-kilometre-long four-lane NH-29 in Karbi Anglong, Assam, have surfaced.

Allegations include inclusion of fake beneficiaries and illegal payments based on fabricated land records.

The letter also draws attention to a recent accident in the Dergaon area, resulting in around 15 fatalities and numerous injuries.

Gogoi urges a thorough investigation into the incident and appeals for appropriate compensation to the victims' families.

Highlighting NHIDCL's purported lacklustre approach and insufficient collaboration with the public and local administration, Gogoi implores Gadkari to initiate a comprehensive probe into NHIDCL's functioning in Assam.

The MP emphasized on the urgency of ensuring the timely completion of the Teok-Sivsagar section of the Numaligarh-Dibrugarh four-lane highway for the well-being of the people of Assam.
