GUWAHATI: Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP from Assam moved a zero hour notice in Lok Sabha on June 21 and appealed that the transportation of four elephants from Assam to Jagannath temple in Ahmedabad should be stopped.

Gogoi stated that keeping in mind the ongoing heat wave in North India, the Ministry of environment and forest should intervene and immediately stop the process of transportation of these animals.

He further added that the animals are going to suffer immensely if they are transported to Ahmedabad by train from Tinsukia and said that authorities should ensure this does not happen.

Prior to the zero-hour notice in Lok Sabha Gogoi had also written a letter to Union environment and forest minister, Prakash Javedkar requesting him to convince the state government to stop the transportation of these animals.

It should be noted that the Assam forest department had granted permission for the transportation of four juvenile elephants, including two females from Tinsukia to Jagganath temple in Ahmedabad to likely take part in the Rath yatra there.
