GUWAHATI: The four-day platinum jubilee celebration of Gauhati High Court (GHC) began on Wednesday. It was attended by a host of dignitaries, including GHC Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta, GHC Judge Justice MR Pathak, and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
CM Sarma also inaugurated the Assamese version of the book Gauhati High Court: History & Heritage.
Wednesday's event was also attended by union minister of Law & justice Kiren Rijiju, who also released a commemorative stamp of Gauhati High Court.
"Delighted and feel proud to attend the Platinum Jubilee Programme of the Gauhati High Court along with the CM of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Justice of Gauhati HC & other dignitaries," Rijiju tweeted.
On the third day of the celebration, on April 7, President Droupadi Murmu will attend the platinum jubilee celebration. She will launch a mobile app Bhoroxa, which has been made for women's safety.
The Gauhati High Court was promulgated by the governor-general of India on March 1, 1948, following the passage of the Government of India Act of 1935, which established the high court for the then-province of Assam on April 5, 1948.
It was renamed Gauhati High Court in 1971 by the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. Previously, it was known as the High Court of Assam and Nagaland.
It encompasses the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram. It has the largest jurisdiction in terms of the number of states.
