GUWAHATI: Assam Government plans to shift Gauhati High Court along with other courts to a State-of-the-Art, Judicial township at Rangmahal, North Guwahati.

In the question hour of the Assam Legislative Assembly on January 6, Minister of Law and Justice, Ranjeet Kumar Dass replying to a question put up by the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Ramendra Narayan Kalita regarding the decision to shift the Gauhati High Court said that the government considers to do the same.

Dass further reasoned it by adding, "The decision was taken after discussions with the Hon'ble Gauhati High Court for setting up a state-of-the-art judicial city. Since the land adjacent to the Upper Court is limited at present, it is not possible to set up a state-of-the-art judicial city. This step has been taken to establish the state-of-the-art judicial infrastructure to meet the long-term requirements of all stakeholders in this regard."

Dass mentioned that the decision has been taken in the interest of providing all facilities to the members of the Lawyers' Association and the public by establishing a composite structure of a new High Court building and other courts for all the courts and tribunals falling under Kamrup Metropolitan District as well as by constructing an adequate number of advocates' rooms, seating areas, library, adequate parking space and other facilities.

Upon being questioned about the massive protest by members of the Bar Association against the decision to relocate the Gauhati High Court, Dass substantiated with the letter attached below.
