The resolution to recommend Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta's elevation was passed by the Collegium, which consists of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant.

Justice Mehta’s judicial career spans over 12 years.

He began his judicial career when he was appointed as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court on May 30, 2011.

With seniority in his parent High Court, he was subsequently elevated to the position of Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, where he has been serving since February 15, 2023.

His practice as a lawyer before trial courts, the High Court, and the Supreme Court mainly centred on constitutional and criminal laws.
